This landmark publication showcases the decorative arts of the Pennsylvania Mennonites.

The book presents traditional Pennsylvania Mennonite textiles, furniture, clocks, carvings, metalwork, pottery, fraktur, quilts, etc.  

Also included are European prototypes, and objects produced by Pennsylvania Mennonite families who settled in Ontario, Canada.

Clarke Hess explores 300 years of his cultural heritage. He tells the stories of these highly-acclaimed Mennonite artisans, and identifies numerous artisans for the first time in print.  

The objects represent the finest Pennsylvania German collections and museums in the United States and Canada.

About the Author, Clarke Hess:

Born in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, Clarke Hess developed a passion for family history, antiques, and architecture during his school years in Lancaster County.

Clarke's family has been Mennonite since the early 17th century.  He has spent his lifetime researching the history, culture, and decorative arts of his Mennonite heritage.

He has curated several exhibits on Mennonite historical arts in Ontario and Pennsylvania.

Clark has served for 20 years as a board director of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society. He also is on the board of directors of the Lancaster County Heritage Center, and the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County.

He has acquired and restored his c. 1744 Hess ancestral homestead near Lititz, Pennsylvania, where he collects  and researches Pennsylvania German antiques.

He is a partner in his family's homebuilding business, Hess Home Builders, in Neffsville, Pennsylvania.
